Our Strategy

Amphibian is an innovation lab developing market-based solutions for nature.

We’re building a portfolio of early-stage projects with incredible partners. We go from zero to one. We run multiple bets in parallel because it’s not often so clear which ideas will be great and which won’t. If that were obvious, venture capitalists would succeed more often.

In our experience working at other innovation labs (such as Google X), we’ve learned that when people work on multiple ideas at a time, there is greater intellectual honesty. It allows us to shut down projects that aren’t progressing without people worrying about losing their jobs. Without this flexibility, organizations can get stuck on a flawed concept because it’s tied to restrictive funding.

Mission-driven teams for the win

Teams driven by a powerful mission are more likely to stay together, succeed, and find creative solutions when things get tough… and they always will when you do anything great!

By working on multiple projects, we have many shared learnings as well as some of the same collaborators and funders. This is exactly what we learned starting early-stage moonshots at Google X, Oceankind, and Google Brain. And, since some ideas should be “products not companies”, our structure as an innovation lab gives us flexibility with how we fund and advance ideas (or spin them out).

Curious what we’re building?
